Light Painting The Still Life... Vintage Collins Legitimus Hammer

Aug 31, 2024

"Collins Legitimus Hammer With Nails" by Harold Ross

Photography opportunities and subjects are abundant, and I strive to remain open to them at all times.

Often, however, friends or family provide me with subject matter that I would never have found on my own! I am always so grateful when this happens.

My friend Mickey (mickey.freed on Instagram) restores old hammers and axes, using beautiful exotic hardwoods. He recently found this vintage hammer (made by the Collins Company) that had been repaired in a very unusual way. Instead of using wedges to tighten the hammer head onto the handle, the hammer's previous owner used nails.

When Mickey showed me a picture of this hammer, I asked him if I could borrow it in order to photograph it, and he agreed!

Light painting allows us to depict a subject in unique ways, revealing exceptional depth, detail, and dimension through the use of light. We have the ability to reveal what isn't seen under other lighting conditions!

Happy Light Painting... and always remember... Skim The Light.
